A perennial bulb (Allium sativum) up to 60 cm/2 ft; narrow, flat leaves; greenish-to-purple star-shaped flowers mixed with bulbils. Native to Asia, it has been cultivated in the Mediterranean region since ancient times for the strongly flavoured bulbs which are widely used in cooking.
